Athletic Association of Malawi general secretary Frank Chitembeya has expressed excitement with the performances of athletes at this year’s national athletics championship.

The athletics body conducted a K1.5 million tournament at Bingu National Stadium where athletes from different parts of the country tussled for different accolades in different categories.

Chitembeya said he is happy because many athletes came to compete at all levels and categories of the sport.

He also said the competition among the athletes was very stiff which has given him hope that the nation is moving forward.

He further stated the competition has helped to expose new female athlete from Zomba who has performed beyond their expectations and she is equally good for international competitions.

“As an association we are satisfied, firstly because of a huge turn up, secondly is the stiff competition and also the new talent which we have identified.”

“There’s a certain lady from Zomba, this was her first appearance but she managed to beat the regulars so we are happy for that. As for men category, we have the champion Stain Lifa who produced fabulous performance in the 100 metres and 200 metres races” he said

Lifa said he is excited to defend his position with the much-improved performance.

He explained that he is looking forward to qualify for Olympic games and represent this country abroad.

“I am very excited as you can see i have managed to win both 100 and 200 metres races in just few seconds as compared to last year. I used the covid19 break to train harder for me to produce such results”

“This tournament is over now I want to train extra hard so that I should qualify for international Olympic games for the first time in our history.”

The tournament was postponed earlier this year following the suspension of all sporting activities as a preventive measure for the spread of Covid-19.

Athletes are expected to compete next year to find those who will be able to represent this country in international Olympic games.
