As the fight against Covid-19 still rages on, the Citizen Response on Covid-19 has announced that it has acquired crucial medicines and resources help in the fight.
Giving an update on an initiative which started on January 15, lead organizer Onjezani Kenani said they have raised about K180 million in 20 days.
Kenan said they have so far purchased 40 cylinders and 40 flowmeters plus oxygen in those 40 cylinders, enoxaparin essential drug and non-rebreather masks and nasal prongs, pressure regulators (flowmeters), 300 pulse oximeters and 1,025 test kits, 1,100 test kits, 40 drip stands plus 25 three-sided bed screens as well as 45 oxygen concentrators.
Kenan further said they have transferred K14 million from the group’s Standard Bank account to National Bank account to have enough money of buying the oxygen concentrators which will be shared in hospitals across the country.
“We will distribute these to hospitals across the country. The concentrators will be on Malawian soil in seven days. As we do not want any delays in buying emergency equipment, we decided to move the cash so we can have enough funds tomorrow to make the K53.2 million payment,” said Kenani.
From the day the movement began, the group has among others bought oxygen cylinders, Enoxaparin essential drug, Covid-19 test kits, pressure regulators, pulse oximeters, drip stands, and three-sided bed screens.
The group has also received emergency equipment from individuals and corporations to help in the fight against Covid-19.
Onjezani Kenani, alongside Society of Medicals Doctors in Malawi president Victor Mithi, and Thandie Hara formed the group to collective funds and equipment to contain the virus after an SOS of insufficient oxygen in Covid-19 isolation centers.
